Italian Tomato Garden: 이태리식의 도마도밭

An old Italian lived alone in New Jersey.
{미국} 뉴져지에 이태리에서 온 한 늙은이가 살았다.

He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard.
그는 매년 했듯이 도마도 밭을 갈기를 원했으나 땅이 굳어서 아주 일하기가 어려웠다.

His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison.
그를 도와 주던 그의 외아들, 빈센트는 감옥에 있었다.

The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament:
늙은이는 아들에게 편지로 그의 곤난한 상태를 써 보냈다.


Dear Vincent,
빈센트야,

I am feeling pretty sad, because it looks like I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year.
금년에는 도마도 밭을 갈 수 없을 것 같아서 나는 꽤나 슬프구나.

I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot.
밭을 갈기에는 내가너무 늙었나 봐.

I know if you were here my troubles would be over..?
네가 여기 있다면 문제 없을 텐데?...

I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days.
예전같이 너는 날 위해서 기꺼히 밭을 갈을 것, 내 잘 알고 있지.

A few days later he received a letter from his son.
며칠후에 그는 아들로 부터 편지 한장을 받았다.

Dear Pop,
아브지,

Don't dig up that garden.
그 밭을 절대 갈지 마세요.
That's where the bodies are buried.
거기엔 많은 시체가 묻혀져 있어요.

Love, Vinnie
사랑해요, 빈센트.

At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies.
그다음날 새벽 4시에 (미국) 연방수사국원과 지방 경찰들이 나타나서는 그지역을 몽땅 파버렸으나 아무 시체도 발견하지 못했다.

They apologised to the old man and left.
늙은이에게 사과한 후 그들은 떠났다.

That same day the old man received another letter from his son.
그날 그 늙은이는 아들로 부터 편지한장 다시 받았다.

Dear Pop,
아브지,

Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now.
이젠 됐으니 도마도을 심으세여.

That's the best I could do under the circumstances.
그게 현재 상황에서 제가 해 드릴 수 있는 최선의 방책이네요.
